Complex Bowel Care

Many people living with disabilities needs assistance with managing their bowel routines, recognising that regular bowel movements are integral to a person’s overall health.

This course will help empower your team to deliver high quality complex bowel care. The course covers the anatomy and basic function of the bowel, why bowel care is provided, different methods of bowel care, different aids for bowel care, bowel care procedures, challenges that may be faced, dietary requirements, and monitoring/ documentation.

Goals

To independently perform complex bowel care with aids using procedures such as digital stimulation, abdominal massage, PR checks and manual removal whilst understanding the risks involved and how to best care for a participant throughout the process.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand why bowel care is required

  • Demonstrate ability to maintain personal hygiene

  • Demonstrate ability to perform complex bowel care procedures – PR checks, digital stimulation, and abdominal massage

  • Demonstrate ability to perform complex bowel care with different aid’s – suppository, enema, anal irrigation, and stoma care

  • Understand adverse effects of bowel care and how to mange

  • Understand the use of medication for healthy bowel management

  • Understand the importance of nutrition for healthy bowel management

  • Demonstrate the ability to document and monitor bowel care
